DNA Engine Opticon 2 Real-Time Cycler PCR detection system uses a fixed array of LEDs for fluorescence excitation (470-505 nm) and two photomultiplier tubes for 2-color detection (523-543 nm 540-700 nm). The DNA Engine Opticon 2 Real-Time Cycler system is built on an DNA Engine thermal cycler which includes a thermal gradient feature. This item includes the thermal cycler 96-well sample block optical tower analysis software with melt curve computer and monitor. Complete system requires purchase of a DNA Engine chassis and an opticon-specific 96-well Alpha unit.

Real time PCR enables both detection and quantification (as absolute number of copies or relative amount when normalized to DNA input or additional normalizing genes) of a specific sequence in a DNA sample. The procedure follows the general principle of polymerase chain reaction; its key feature is that the amplified DNA is quantified as it accumulates in the reaction in real time after each amplification cycle.

Multicolor capability allows detection of SYBR Green I and FAM in the first channel and a range of fluorophores in the second channel including TET HEX VIC and TAMRA for a multitude of applications such as RT-qPCR and allelic discrimination.

The Thermo-Finnigan ELEMENT2 is a High Resolution mass spectrometer, where the ions are generated by means of an Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP). The instrument has been designed for fast multi-element-analyses in the low, medium, and high resolution. 

The mass range is 5 - 260 Dalton. The mass resolution (three fixed settings) of >300, >4.000 and >10.000 resolve most of the overlapping interferences. This increases the sensitivity and brings the detection limit down to trace level in the ppt to ppq-range.

The ELAN DRC ICP-MS analyzes minor and trace elements of solutions and solids by mass spectrometry. The mass spectra can be used to analyze over 70 elements. The typical sensitivity of the ICP-MS is ppt and less than 3 minutes for rapid multi-element capability. The ELAN DRCII can be operated in both standard mode and dynamic reaction cell mode. 

The Dynamic Reaction Cell (DRC) is used to reduce isobaric interferences.

 
This ICP-MS instrument can be coupled to a conventional liquid auto-sampler or to laser ablation systems to conduct LA-ICP-MS direct analysis of solid materials without requiring previous chemical digestion.

The ICP-OES is another tool used for elemental analysis that couples ICP plasmas with optical emission detectors. The ICP-OES is ideal for detection elements in applications that don’t require the degree sensitivity of the ICP-MS. Typical detection limits range in the ppb to low ppm level. The instrument has dual radial and axial capabilities to allow improvement of sensitivity and selectivity for certain samples and matrices.  The ICP-OES has the advantage over ICP-MS that samples containing both mayor elements and trace elements do not represent a contamination risk for the system because only the emission light -and not the sample-enters the detector.  The wide dynamic range allows simultaneous measurements of elements present in trace, minor and major levels.

The TEAF has three different laser ablation units that can be coupled to any of the existing ICP instruments (ICP-MS, HR-ICP-MS and ICP-OES) depending of the sample requirements and purpose of the analysis.

 
Laser ablation is a state of the art sample introduction platform that has simplified the analysis of solid materials by performing rapid direct micro-sampling of solid materials with high sensitivity, accuracy and precision. Laser ablation possesses several key features that provide a tremendous potential for its application to forensic and material analysis such as, requiring minimum sample preparation and sample consumption (ng to few ug), eliminating the need of complex procedures and handling of hazardous materials for the digestion of samples, permitting the detection of major, minor and trace elements with high precision and accuracy, reducing the risk of contamination and polyatomic interferences associated with aqueous solutions; to mention some.

Our SEM-EDS is coupled to an x-ray beam having dual capability to conduct high magnification imaging as well as elemental analysis by either SEM-EDS or u-XRF. This analytical tool provides exceptional depth of field, minimal specimen preparation, and the ability to combine the technique with X-ray microanalysis. Designed to image samples ranging from biological specimens to forensic trace evidence and nanomaterials, the XL provides high-resolution imaging and image enhancement capabilities. 
 Our SEM system has different detectors: backscatter detector, secondary electron detector, CCD camera and EDX detector. The instrument also has the dual capabilities of working in high and low vacuum modes. Low vacuum mode eliminated the need to coat non-conductive samples and image wet samples.

 
Typical detection limits for SEM-EDS are >0.1% while u-XRF detection limits range between 10-100ppm.
